Leather sofas – Finding a Sofa that Lasts

Choosing a sofa can be a fairly big task, as whatever you choose, you’ll want it to be a fixture of your home for years to come. As the centrepiece of most living rooms, you want your sofa to be comfortable, to look great and most importantly, to last. Once you’ve established the size you need: two-seater, three-seater, corner, etc., the next big decision is usually the style, which begins with weighing up fabric sofas versus leather sofas. So, when you’re shopping for sofas, just remember to consider the four Cs:

Cleaning

Fabric sofas can be also be easily hoovered clean; and they do fare better than leather sofas if you have a cat that likes to scratch! They also often have removable covers that can be professionally cleaned or simply put in the washing machine to freshen up them up. Although they provide a sleeker, more modern look, any damage to a leather sofa is there to stay, and rips or tears in the fabric are fairly inevitable over time.

Leathe Sofa Design and Type

Colour

One of the downsides to choosing a leather sofa is that the colours are often a lot more restrictive. The material primarily lends itself to neutral shades like black, cream and brown, complementing minimalist décors best. Fabric sofas, on the other hand, have a much wider choice of colours and patterns – so if you’re looking for a sofa to liven up the room, then fabric will be the better choice.

Comfort

Fabric sofas are generally much more comfortable and inviting than leather varieties, which can seem cold to the touch, especially in winter when you need a warm place in which to snuggle up. However, simply adding a throw and some cushions can make a leather sofa much more comfy – and can also add a touch of colour to the otherwise neutral tone.

It may seem like a far-fetched point, but it’s useful to bear in mind that some people, such as vegans, will feel uncomfortable with real leather. If you have any vegan friends or a wide social circle, it’s something you might want to consider in thinking about the impact of your sofa on visitors. Faux leather can be equally convincing, and may also put your ethically conscious friends more at ease.

Character

A leather sofa has a timeless look that dates well, and they’re versatile enough to last through several re-decorations. Fabric sofas usually come with more style and colour options, but can look a bit more worn after a few years – although, this can easily be remedied with a new throw, covers and/or cushions, which is also a good way to refresh your living room without having to buy a brand new sofa.

A big part of the decision will involve the character of the room in which the sofa will live. For instance, a leather sofa would look great in a traditional, classic living room, or a room decorated in a minimalist style. Fabric sofas tend to look a lot better in cosy, homely living room, or a room that needs warming up if it’s a little too clinical-looking. Once you’ve decided on your fabric, you’re free to have fun choosing your favourite!
